Everyone says Lugano is one of the quieter cities but in Autumn, in October the streets come alive with the sound of music. Autumn lands with a vengeance in Lugano in October, though during the day you can stroll through balmy sunshine, evenings bring a chill that demands light covering. During the evenings Piazza Riforma becomes the centre of the action with vendors selling local novelties and hot food.
As Lugano is not quite Italian but also not exactly alpine, the food borrows from both cultures. Hearty and rich, the menu includes polenta, pizzoccheri, and luganighetta, all great tasting dishes throughout the year, but always better in chilly weather. Chestnuts are another speciality and are available in many forms from roasted to vermicelli.
