The larches of Balavaux are iconic in their stature and beauty. Known as the artists of the forests, larches are the only European conifer to refresh it’s needles every year, going from pale green shoots, golden pollen cones and red cone blossoms in spring to swathes of gold when autumn arrives.
Tours in French are organised by Nandez Tourism in October where hikers take a gondola ride from Nandez to Tracouet where they can look down the entire Rhône valley. The trail then loops around to the sunny South facing slopes of the Balavaux before leading through the larches and on to the Bisse de Saxon irrigation channel. Spaces can be booked via the Nandez Tourism site.
